Andrew Fifita? Absolutely. Looks about ready to retire tbh. His best days are 100% behind him.

Yep Andrew. Was taking a punt on him hoping he would have a decent year with Gal out. Not looking those odds for $$.

Dravid shared a link, saying he can literally medically retire, but loves the game so much so will likely play limited min.

There’s an article a few pages by by dravid basically saying he can medically retire tomorrow but he’s not ready.
Seems he will play on till his knee is done

sounds like his knee is already done though, and he is just battling through it.

Sucks for him a person, imagine when he is 35-40 without the sports physio’s, might be on crutches rest of his life unless there is knee replacement surgery.

TBH the trials clearly showed his knee is buggered and he has allowed, little lateral movement. He was never a buy.

Unfortunately didn’t have enough time to look as closely at trials and articles in the lead up to this season as past (came in the money top 10 last season). Thankfully team other than Fifi has held up alright and managed a respectable 1,023 rd1 so not too far off the pace.

“We have a huge, fixed-cost base,” he said.

“There’s very, very few businesses that I know that can continue to get by when their fixed costs are higher than their revenues.

“We have a number of games we have to fulfil to provide content to our broadcasters, and the broadcasters pay us a fee for that.

“Clearly, if we don’t provide the content as scheduled, there are commercial impacts to that.

“That’s an issue we’re facing.”

Now tell us again how it’s player welfare thats at the forefront?

player welfare means jack if the actual NRL goes bankrupt. then suddenly every player is out of work.

There’s an article by Gould saying there were planning on saving 50million every year from 2012. So they should have a backup of 3-400million

https://www.nrl.com/siteassets/about/annual-reports/nrl_annualreport_2019.pdf

no where close to that amount. If revenue goes to zero this year (can’t fulfill commercial television deal, plus no money from gate takings etc) and costs remain constant = bankrupt

The word “should” was very important there haha

The proposal was for the NRL to create a “rainy day” fund. They chose not to.

I think that was the money that the powers that be decided to spend on a digital arm (ie NRL.com).

That is why the NRL is ploughing ahead with playing. They are literally fighting for survival. They simply don’t have the type of reserves the NBA or EPL have. AS soon as 1 player goes down in a team environment the financial health of the NRL will be in dire straits.

It’ll be interesting to see what Clubs/NRL are allowed to do regarding reducing players wadges. I know a few workplaces where full-time staff are being asked to take pay cuts to help out so the precedent is there. Like has been said the NRL can’t survive paying the players wadges and getting $0 income. Players might have to take a normal persons wadge for a year haha!

Compared to the general population, NRL players are extremely safe. They have the most rigorous medical attention and planning around them right now. Virtually everyone I know is still going to work and still has to earn their money – why should it be different for NRL players?

Players not playing means no games, means no income from broadcasting or sponsors, will eventually (given the length it continues) no NRL and then players will be out of a job. How would player welfare be then?
