POI – Kodi Nikorima

I trust everyone has enjoyed the off season break and been amazing to see the quality of posts getting better and better each year.

This time around I’m focusing in on one of the absolute premium halfbacks that only played a handful of games and has been severely under-priced SC wise but boasts an amazing record when he does take the field. He will surely be a future great for his club and should be in every team. Of course this could only be Johnat…KODI NIKORIMA EVERYBODY!

2017 Stats:

  • 785 points
  • 16 appearances
  • 49.1 average
  • 2018 price: $435,400

There is so much to like about this young gun that finally got his chance in the number 7 last year. On the surface his stats frame him as a mid-ranger when really he has every chance of becoming a genuine SuperCoach weapon of mass destruction.

The key factor that has him heavily under-priced is that he got shuffled around during stages of the 2017 season as a ‘Mr-fix-it’, subbing in at HOK or briefly at FB off the bench. This happened on five occasions where he was typically getting around 20- 30 mins in the wrong positions which killed his average.

Where it really gets interesting is the 11 matches he was allowed to play the full 80 mins combining with Anthony Milford while playing at HB. Given Wayne Bennett has publicly stated he will retain Niko as his permanent number 7 these are the games I’m focusing in on. To put it simply this is how those games turned out:

Scores: 73, 21, 71, 70, 61, 72, 96, 65, 40, 34, 81

Average base points: 25

This works out at an average of 62.2PPG, pricing him at approximately 555k, a 120k increase on his current starting price!!

While this alone should be a selling point, and would put his average slightly above Pearce, DCE and Hunt; there are plenty of other things to like about him:

  1. Great early draw – In a very unsurprising turn of events the Broncos have secured a relatively soft start to the 2018 year, with Kodi’s first 6 victims being the Dragons, Cowboys, Tigers, Titans, Knights and Warriors. You’d certainly expect a few high scoring games out of this bunch and by the end of this period you’ll know if he will be a long term keeper or it should be perfect timing to swap him out to a new cow (Adam Reynolds replacement??) or go to a falling gun.
  2. Winning nature – Out of the 11 games in question, Broncos went on to win 10 of them. Plenty has been published surrounding the partnership forming between Niko and the Milf which should only get stronger and also leads to the next point.
  3. Job security – As mentioned above, Bennet has plenty of faith in this 23-year-old to get the job done, and with very little depth in the halves department there isn’t anyone else bashing down the door to take the HB spot from him. I also love that he has gradually been blooded into the side and already has several seasons of experience in and around first grade.
  4. Potential VC – I always like getting in a Broncos outside back to serve as a VC loop candidate. While he hasn’t served up tons so far, given the wealth of 70+ scores it’s not a stretch to imagine him converting a few this year. Although the Broncos don’t have the Friday night dominance they used to they do play Thursday or Friday night games in 7/12 rounds before the round 13 bye including their first three matches.
  5. POD – As of writing this if you are after someone a bit different from the cookie cutter teams, Nikorima has a 1% ownership.

The biggest con against him is that like a lot of other halves he has lost his dual status, and in a massive turnaround from last year there are plenty of Halfback candidates and not many value picks at 5/8 unless you drop serious cash.

The fact that myself and another 48% of people have JT in their side who is also HB only plays against Nikorima, therefore you will have to mindful of balancing your team and likely playing one of them off your bench. Depending on TLT this could lead to playing the likes of Carty or Connor Watson as a cheaper starting 5/8 or spending big and taking three premium halves to start the season.

However, despite that slight issue it is definitely worth the risk to start with Kodi, I know I will be and will be chanting “Penalty Broncos” to kick off each and every week!

I’m not sure where the easy run is for broncos , got to love broncos supporters . Kodi might go ok but for me I can’t see that happening , he will up against one of the best packs dragons and x club mate hunt first round , one would think he will have a quiet one. Tigers first game at campbelltown , not many players go well there even JT smith and co. Struggle , knights away against eseese and moga and a team with Pearce will lift against the broncos and then you have warriors away with Blair… Read more »

I am a one eyed Broncs supporter, so I disagree strongly hahahaha

Hahaha , i understand . Last year I said raiders will miss the 8 and they were all ready to hunt me down and kill me lmao. Seriously though are you confident with the pack you have compared to other years ? Losing arrow Blair eseese Wallace and co leaves you guys with no depth up front . The young kids need another year or two, I can’t see them going well

Can we bury this “Broncos have no front row depth” nonsense 1. Korbin Sims – emerging Origin, Fijian international 2. Lodge – scumbag, but certainly one of the most promising young players in the league 3. Thaiday – Im not a big fan, but hes played plenty of representative football for a reason. Sitll has a quality 30 mins per game to give 4. Pangai Jrn – tongan international, Probably the best young forward in the game. Bolter for NSW this year 5. Joe O – Tongan international, 4th season with the Broncos. 6. George Fai – Junior Kangaroo –… Read more »

I am so happy we got rid of Blair, thinking back to last year were he practically threw one game with an early offload off the kick off, 1st game gets dragged into in goal against sharks and taking out Macca, he cost us so many games at times, giving away stupid penalties on the last and generally right infront of the goals. We have huge potential in our forwards this year I feel, competition everywhere. Even Oates who may push Glen out for a starting spot. Bennet wouldn’t loose Ese’ese, Wallace and Arrow without having replacemnet plans. Look at… Read more »

x 1000 – Well said.

Sims – another injured guy everyone forgets about.

Lets take Smith (Macca) , Slater (Boyd), Mclean (Sims) out of the Storm side, give Munster (Milford) a shoulder injury and see how many 2017 playoff games they win

Didn’t storm make a GF without Slater ? Didn’t cows make a GF without JT and Scott , no excuses with that team .

Mate you are labelling 4th tier nations as internationals bahaha none are proven nrl performers . Let’s say how these kids go week in week out , I agree pangai is a fun but will he be unleashed this year ? Odds are Glenn will plug along there , the rest you named I know plenty about but you are naming me raw talent. Sims a Fijian international wow shut the gates, he is way down the props pecking order . Name all the props in every team and they are under all even packer and matulino at the tiges… Read more »

Packer and Matulino is genuinely one of the best combos in the league.

You’re thesis statement was – “are you confident compared with recent years”?

My answer is an emphatic yes.

Tigers4life

Mate I’m just saying your points are not valid . Teams in top 8 Props cows : McLean , Scott , Bolton, lolo Hess is what I call depth. Storm : Jbrom , Nelson asofa, glasby, kasiano have 2 proper internationals Panthers RCG, tamou , Merrin, mckendry Raiders : paulo, Boyd , gubb all better prospects than sims and lodge dragons : graham Vaughan and whoever plays the 3 mins a game off bench Teams outside 8 Dogs : klemmer , Woods proper internationals Tiges : matulino , Packer , twal Like I said they will need a few piggy… Read more »

Using NAS in an argument…. lololol He has played 50NRL games and 4 internationals. And lol at the Raiders comparison.

How is he ANY different to Pangai and Joe-O?!?!?!

Of course id rather win the comp, but i would much rather my team is a perennial semi final loser than a bottom feeder like the Tigers champ.

Tigers4life

The day we sign a ref as 18th man is the day tiges will go well. Add to that 1 team city and a cap to much the rorters lol .
Anyway not sure why you are getting touchy, I’m just pointing out the props are not webcke civa material.
I also pointed out 3 props in paulo boyd and nas to point out they are much bigger and better than JO.
Also I much rTher not make semis and win a GF first go than choke every year and have false hope. Enjoy the top 5 again be proud of that 🙂

All those guys may end up being fantastic. Have to say though as a Warriors fan, its nice to see some other teams pinning their forward hopes on things like ‘Tongan international’ and ‘the next SBW’ (or the next Lauititiiti in our case). So many of those guys never reach that potential.

hahaha it is a nice change

I think second tier international status is very relevant.

The thesis statement for the Bronco haters is “they have no experience”

The fact Sims, Joe-O and Pangai have played significant international Rugby league should absolutely count as experience.

Did we all just forget that Fiji and Tonga made the world cup semi final?

J O can’t even get in front of lodge mate , fair dinkum.

I think the Broncos are way better in 2018, than 2017. Lets have a look at some of the biggest arguments of the Buzz Rothfield gang (i.e Broncos wont make the 8) – Loss of Ben Hunt – Hunt got dropped in Round 14 last year. And for good reason. Hes an absolute shell of the player we all remember from 2015. For his sake, I hope the change of scenery reminds him of the player he used to be – Loss of other players – Moga and Blair were the two most penalised broncos by signficant margins in 2017… Read more »

Let’s argue your points Losing hunt who is challenging for a SOO jumper and has played close to 200 games and a GF and origin and for Aus !!!! at the age of 27 years old they say is the peak age compared to Kodi who is the replacement who has only had 50 odd games and 7 internationals. I know which pack I prefer to be behind and it’s not kodis . Moga and Blair , well moga was actually the go to in attack and produced many times, giving away penalties when he has milf inside him who… Read more »

As a diehard broncos fan – absolute hand on heart; I feel

Niko > Bunt (Brisbane 2017 version)
Lodge / Pangai / Joe O > Adam Blair
Bird > Moga

TugSpeedman

I agree with those trade offs for sure.

I don’t particularly want to get involved with the disagreement above but I hardly see how you can say that the Broncos have a shit pack. Lack of experience yes but shit no…

Are there better packs in the NRL, definitely.

Are there worse packs in the NRL, I think so.

Will Broncos make the 8 with the side they have, barring injury I believe they will be pushing for a top 4 spot along with 8 other clubs.

TugSpeedman

For the record, I don’t like the tigers side all that much but I don’t bash their team or supporters, I think they have recruited some decent players and have an exceptional coach. Do I think they’re a top 8 side, well to be honest no. But I don’t understand why people when they don’t like a side for whatever reason, why they have to go out of their way to argue it on here or try to belittle people on their opinions?

DrewyPOD
Member

To be fair mate, i made one comment about the Tigers being bottom feeders…

And it was in response to being accused of supporting and rewarding mediocrity.

TugSpeedman

It was more just a generalised statement man.

To go back to the premiership (or lack there of) statement. Am I happy about not winning a premiership, hell no.
Am I happy about finishing top 5 consistently, hell yes.
Id prefer to be consistently good and sitting in the upper echelon of sides rather than constantly fighting teams for the spoon.

TugSpeedman

On top of all that though.

We a here to share info and opinions on teams and players, not here to fight between ourselves. We are all adults and the occasional bit of banter is the goods, apart from that respect the opinion of others and leave the personal agendas out of it.

Now lets get back to SC!!

DrewyPOD
Member

There hasn’t been a single personal agenda raised

Just a good old fashioned internet fight between a broncos and a tigers fan, whilst we are all likley bored at work hah

Tigers4life
Member

It might have veered off track alittle but just arguing the case with Kodi and the pack he has now , Moses is a classic example . He left us and went to a stronger pack and his avg went over 60.

Tigers4life
Member

It’s good to disagree on things , there’s good points on both sides . Round 1 will be a cracker dragons vs broncos not sure there will be many points though .

DrewyPOD
Member

Most of the antagonistic statements came from @tigers4life

– broncos have no depth
– penalty broncos rubbish
– broncos forward pack isnt as good as previous years
– Broncos will struggled because of their tough schedule

Why are we all so afraid of getting into an argument on an online forum? Thats exactly what they are for?

To that end – Love ya work @tigers4life

Great discussion apart from the standings attributed happiness stuff. Lets just keep it about football.

Tigers4life

I haven’t belittled broncos, I simply stated the broncos pack is worse and not the same as previous years which will contribute to broncos attack not being as good.
I got attacked and you guys are taking it personally. Will tiges make the 8 no, I don’t cry if someone has an opinion.
Like I said this is my opinion and it will be different from majority of people on here but that’s my feel on the broncos team.

DrewyPOD

The only person who has been personally attacked is my boi Joe O

Kids a beast hahah

Cheech - death-riding JT

i’m pretty new to NRL, how much can the attack drop off from losing blair? Broncos were 2nd in tries scored last year. The drop off from last year is minimal, compared to the drop off of the last 5 years..

Tigers4life

They lost arrow Blair eseese and Wallace year before , all would be in front of current crop mate. Eseese has been quoted as the next best prop in the game , Wallace made origin and big wraps on arrow. It’s not just Blair.

Tigers4life

Also Thaiday and Glenn are not the same players anymore, they are a top 4 side on paper but my view is they will struggle . Anyway back to work 🙂 great debate and interesting year ahead SC and footy wise bring on 2018

Well that was fun haha All I’ll say is we won how many games with Milf and Niko together in the halves? 10 from 12 or something I think…..promising. Do I think we’ll win the comp this year….sadly no and the long wait is agonising lol I was born in ’82 and since I was 10 until the age of 25 I was living in bliss haha 2015 was a heart breaker. I’m keen to see how our youngsters go in the pack and with another year experience this year…well look out next year. We’ll be up there when the… Read more »
