PLAYER PROFILE

There’s no point listing out Turbo’s 2021 SuperCoach achievements. We all know them, we all know why he is by far the most expensive player in the competition, we all expect him to notch big scores this year and be the #1 player in the game. The massive, massive difference now is that we suddenly have to find $1.26m to have him in our sides from round 1. He started last year at only $594k! There are a couple of reasons why this is not a move to make so soon into 2022:

  • He is almost 13% of your entire salary cap. Buying him would mean you have to go mid-tier to start the year across key positions which could hurt both point scoring and cash generation (crucial to the early rounds of this game). There are just not enough cheapies or mid-rangers with scope for huge value increases to fill your side effectively.
  • He starts the year against the Panthers and Roosters before an easier matchup against the Dogs. Even if he averages 100 points those 3 games, he will shed around $200k+ from his price tag. If he scores 40 in one of those games (his lowest effort all of last year) this could mean he falls back to around $900k. With your squad value naturally increasing over that time with your cash cows fattening up, this makes him even more affordable in real value terms. SuperCoach is a marathon, not a sprint, and setting up the rest of your side for success is more important than potentially catching on to a few huge scores to start your season.
  • The game is starting to level out. Teams have had a season or so now to adapt to ‘Vlandysball’, and while Turbo was able to beat up on some depleted sides and teams looking towards Mad Monday in the back end of the year, it should be a lot tougher to start 2022 as the rust affects even the best sides.
  • There is a history of injury here that thankfully didn’t rear its ugly head last season. Frail hamstrings unfortunately don’t wear off.

With all of that said, there is no doubting that absolutely no one in SuperCoach wants to come up against someone who has Tommy Turbo in their side. Non-owners can attest to just how stressful it is when you watch a Manly game when he looks like busting the line with every single run he takes. With him, you have a genuine captaincy option every single week without question. That takes out a big element of the game as this guy just doesn’t have down weeks.

You need to carefully consider whether the sacrifices you’re making in other positions from the start are worth it, when there is every chance you can pick him up for a lot cheaper a month or so into the game. Based on current numbers, owning Turbo will be a huge POD to start the season. We are all likely to own him at some point this year. If you want a jump-start on the competition and think you have enough cash cows in your squad to cover yourself, get on him from the start.

But if you’re not about such a massive risk so early on, make Turbo a ‘one to watch’ and join the death ride train. A couple of other fullbacks like James
Tedesco and Ryan Papenhuyzen, who you can get together for almost the same price as one Turbo, are no slouches on their day, either.
