Player of Interest – Matt Moylan
It’s Matt Moylan hype season and he is fitter than he has ever been before, he is stronger now, he is driven because he’s trying
to earn a new contract; the narratives are plentiful.
Moylan is almost the cheapest of a little group of dirty mid-range five-eighth options including the likes of Milford, Watson and Hoy. He has arguably the biggest injury history of these names though, and that’s saying something considering how much game time that Watson has missed recently.
It’s worth noting that in four games playing five-eighth last year, Moylan averaged just 29 PPG from his four games, with the rest of his scores being from the bench or from fullback (1 bench game for 28 points, and 3 games for a 28.3 average although this includes leaving two games from fullback early). Yes, the injury risk is definitely very real, especially given his recent history, but much like Api Koroisau, the risk could be worth the reward (although not quite as safe given the higher floor for starting hookers in SuperCoach).
A brief look at Moylan’s scores from 2017 and before is all you need to do to see the ceiling that’s there for him, and it ultimately comes down to your appetite for risk/reward from Round 1 in the season. There is the question mark of whether or not Moylan holds a spot in the starting line-up once SJ is fit – whether at five-eighth or pushing back to fullback – in which case you would have to seriously consider that he is the riskier of the cheap end mid-rangers at the five-eighth position.

Geez I am torn with this bloke – just like his hammies
Nice one Catfish
In all due respects comparisons to last year is irrelevant. Two of the games he played with a grade two tear and was on one leg, that game where Liam Martin carved him up comes to mind. He also didn’t finish many game’s. Although his hammys could go at any time hes worth a punt. One of my first ever games I’ve league I watched was his debut and he put on a clinic and have loved watching him ever since and followed him closely, I could see on Saturday in the trial that he’s moving the best he has… Read more »
In a perfect world you hold Moylan until SJ is back and by this time he has risen in price to do a straight one for one swap.
Moylan would never be in my team in a perfect world
Fair call. I retract the word perfect.
It is very simple with him, if he is fit, he averages 50+. As a fellow hamstring sufferer, I question his mental ability to extend at full pace though
Never suffered a hammy injury but the way people describe the pain scares the hell out of me.
