As we welcome in the new year with champagne, fireworks and the possibility of keyrings, it’s time for us to start tinkering with our 2019 SuperCoach sides.

Thankfully, the team at News Ltd have come to the party this year and opened up the Team Planner (for those with a SuperCoach Gold subscription) early so we have a great asset to start pulling together our respective squads. Just log into the official SuperCoach and as long as you have a subscription it will be available for you enjoy.

This post is designed for you to share your squad of the day / hour and seek feedback. To make things tick over nicely it’s a good idea to give a bit of advice yourself, no one likes a tight ass.

Enjoy!

Hi all. Welcome back for another year! All of our SC Talk Leagues will be posted at 6pm QLD time (7pm NSW time) on Tuesday 22 Jan. The codes will go up and all leagues are open to all – it is a first in, first served basis. Once a league is full it won’t let you join it so move onto the next code you would like to join. Cheers

feedback please…
Obviously the response will be for a perfect world and not accounting for Byes and Injuries.. but in our first side how many players are people expecting to keep for the season ? IE i have c murray and i would count him as 1 as i would keep him as a 18-21 player and possibly top 17 depending on his form and minutes.. D cook in my side and i have no intention of selling…

At this stage I have 11. However, based on past experience there will probably be only 2-3 players that make it through the year unscathed (either injured or dropped…and signed again…and dropped again…).

For me it depends on how a few players go. Atm I have a side with cook in it he would be 1, Radley as back up in 2row and if given 60min could be a hold also great through soo.

My 2rf atm is arrow/kikau/Murray who if all play to expectations can stay.

Frf papali and tpj as well depending injuries and soo same as above

My hlfs I am trying to make money and pts and then sell before or around soo.

Flb I want to see how barba and brimson go, both could be handy cover though soo

so that only makes 7-8 season long keeprs ?

Ha yeah, atm thinking or trying to start with Cleary/Widdop and Morgan so they could be keepers too but history has shown dragons fall off,

If I was to start with Cleary and he was injury free I would keep him through soo, Morgan maybe to make 200k then sell prior to soo. Widdop who knows???

yep im also looking at all 3 but if the warriors and parra both start cheap 1/2a ill only be starting 2.. SJ a risk with the new club.. DCE and Cleary and likely morgan will all play origin.. and nobody else stands out at 1/2 for me.. widdop i really like at fullback kicking goals but there is a heap of players at 5/8 id like like Munster/brinsom/ponga etc.. even conor watson at fullback also interest me

Yeah I like the look of brimson if he gets flb, also milf with seibold at the helm. Widdop I am looking at for the starting 10-12 rds last two years opening 7-8 rds he has had an 81 and 82 av then drops form.

Like the side, I feel gillet will need time to get back full game fitness and Mann don’t know to what extent he will be used.

Apparently, Mann has the inside track to the starting hooker role. If he averages in the 40s he could make a bit of coin and offer reliable cheapie scores at CTW.

Oh, I thought it would be starting from the bench but playing hok. Could be interesting if he does start in the 9 though

I only read that yesterday so it might be emerging news. But yes the word is they will start him at 9. Keep a close eye on this in trials.

Yeah like you said cheep 40s in ctw good reserve and barge over for a try make some cash.

If Mann does get the starting spot surely they need a backup on the bench. Levi / Buhrer / Woolford ?

If Mann starts at 9, wouldn’t they need a backup hooker on the bench ?

ive owned Scott in the past (mostly in draft comps) and he is always very underwhelming. I feel he is priced appropriately, especially as i dont really see Storm increasing their attacking output. Plent of others i would prefer to gamble on over him.

Has anybody looked at Round 1? There are seven incredibly competitive games, then there is Penrith v Parra! Captain Cleary anybody?

After putting the C on Rapana in Rd 1 last year I’m a little hesitant in putting the C on a back again

That being said Cleary will be locked in with the C haha

I was at that match and it was terrifying when Raiders put 3 tries on in the first 10 mins. I bet you thought Rapana (c) was a pretty choice at that point wink

I had had my eye on captain SJ v the Bulldogs at home since the draw was released. I guess its time for a new plan!

Except SJ will be playing the Knights now, not the Bulldogs. Which could be a tight grindy game

I just can’t seem to leave my team alone! HOK: CSmith, WEgan FRF: AFifita, TPangai, PHaas, Cheap 2RF: JArrow, JPapalii, VKikau, CMurray, VRadley, Cheap HFB: NCleary, CHarris-Tavita 5/8: CMunster, KMann CTW: KCapewell, BHampton, JBird, ZLomax, TMilne, GLeleisiuao, AHopoate FLB: JTedesco, BBarba I’d look to hold Barba until the end of the first bye round then move him on to someone who plays the next bye (unless he’s killing it and keeping pace with the top FLB). Arrow injury free and with minutes is a weapon and I’m happy to start with him. Papalii is only in the side if he… Read more »

It is a stacked side but you are looking very skinny for your last reserve, particularly with Lomax/Bird already in the 17. Perhaps try to find some coin to upgrade the last 2RF spot to Stimson?

You have basically zero coverage for the first bye so you certainly wont be setting and forgetting all of those guns.

Hampton – I see him in a few teams. Is he getting Linnet’s centre position? even if so, his (very surprising) good scores at the start of 2018 were from Fullback (although I also think I remember him filling in at CTR a time or 2 as well). He is an Avoid for me.

VRadley will be fully Rad if he gets 80, but I’d be surprised if that happens in a stacked Roosters pack. As a bench 50 min player he’s fully priced IMO

Good call on Fifita, may have to try and include him now.

Prozach
Member

I think the hope with Radley is that he gets the Lock position fulltime. With Napa gone, Liu who spent some time at Lock last season should play mostly at prop. In 7 games when starting at Lock last season he averaged 54 mins at 62.5 points per game. His season average was 43, so even if he doesn’t get 80, if he starts he should improve his average by almost 20 points

I’m at a real loss for first bye round players. There just aren’t many I’d want to start the season with. They are either high priced backs or I see a better player in their position to start the season…

I have 8 at present + a few Origin players. Looks like 17 in Round 12 will be very difficult. Fingers crossed for the loophole to save us!

Great team,
I am of the same opinion if papali gets lock, arrow injury free and with at least 60min is a must imo, what worries me is peachy.
I thought about fafita and may have to rejigger my draft team to try and fit him in, without a few names and injury free (knee last year) set and forget.
I am super keen on barba coming back firing. Also think a fit bird can push for a 50av has a 27 or something.

Hey guys, it’s been a while. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and has had a good start to 2019. Been riding the NFL wave and missed alot of NRL. Who are the good cheapies appearing so far? And who are the unmissable players?

Korisau – Egan
Surgess Tapau -Haas Cheap
Lolo Arrow Matto Murray Stimson Rad
Morgan CHT
Munster Salmom
Whitehead Capewell Mann Parker Lomax Xerri Nikora
Ponga Barba
$83k itb
Maybe 10 for rnd 12

Dumped Moose and Moylan to help with rnd 12, but not thrilled about it.

Ty sb One of 6 always start slow but I simply don’t believe the 2 gun fb can start the season at that pace ,ie,enough to hold price. Teddy coming back from Club challenge and Turbo finished with some big numbers to keep his price up there but if needed the biggest flop will go to a surprise breakout and will look at it then for fb upgrades. That’s todays plan anyhow.

When putting a team together/draft team where do you start? Fourth year playing trying to better last season. Guns you would hold for the year, bar injury, or undervalued players? Where cheapies are include them? Thoughts and advice heavily appreciated…

Stilesy

1. Players I can’t have a team without: could be “guaranteed” cheapies like Lomax or complete weapons like Teddy. Forms the skeleton of a team. 2. Undervalued players: those who had a down year or injured who will bounce back and represent value. These players are likely not quite guns or cheapies, falling into your mid-range category. Do these after step 1 as you ideally want more players from the first category. 3. Fillers: depending on how many positions and $$ you have left, fill the gaps with players who you would be OK having. These will most likely be… Read more »

Some basic maths behind my selections:-

8 NPRs / Cheapies = $1,500,000
First 17 = $8,100,000 or an average of $475,000 per player

Anyone else interested in Carty after what Brennan said about him? Sounds like a legitimate chance of starting on an edge this year

TurkeySnow
Member

What did he say? Problem is their forward depth, likely that James pushes to an edge with Wallace/boys starting props, hipgrave/Boyle/futiki bench rotation. Proctor/James edges and arrow 13, peaches has to fit with 3 decent centres Copley/lee/kelly.

Yesterday proctor said he was training at hlf with brimson at 5/8 so who knows yet.

Just a training drill from my understanding – Brimson with the ball , Peach outside (ctw) and Carty inside (left 2rf ) Drills at this stage of the preseason include depth combos but the coach thinks Carty is going well. (as always)

If he’s selected and I need to free up cash I may consider him. But with Murry, Radley, Stimson, Sorenson i think there’s better options there for just a bit more.

Didn’t Brennan also add that Carty has looked in the “best physical shape” since his breakout year with the Panthers, all those years ago, or words to that effect. Mental shape?

Mmmmm. If he starts I might risk picking him as a pseudo-cow; full-unicorn mode. Yep call me crazy, but if he hits some form: party time. It would be hard for him to sink much lower.

Still, it’s hard to take preseason comments too seriously. Every year, from the Eels’ camp I hear: “Toughest preseason yet” and “Training the house down”. I’m immune to hope.
