Here we are in week 14. It honestly feels like I was scanning draft lists and figuring out who the value picks for season 2017 were, and now we’ve hit fantasy playoffs. Or more accurately for me in this website’s league, missed fantasy playoffs. If you’re still alive and kicking, let’s keep you going to win the whole thing.
Hopefully, you don’t have to deal with any of the injury (Joe Mixon and Zach Ertz) or suspension (Rob Gronkowski and JuJu Smith-Schuster) headaches and get a clear run through week 1.
The best I can do at this point is wish you good luck and hopefully, help you find a winning bet. I’ll focus on other things. Other leagues and, Oh look. 2018 SuperCoach team picker is open….
What we learnt
Here’s a few things we learnt in week thirteen. It was the first week since Nov 14 2004 that Eli Manning wasn’t a starting QB. Geno Smith lost to the Raiders, the Giants coaching staff got sacked, Eli is back starting this week. Hardly seems worth the fuss. Marshawn had his first 100+ yard game since coming out of retirement. He looks good for the run home. Frank Gore is now 5th all time is rush yard totals. Larry Fitzgerald is now 1 of 3 players ever with 1200 career receptions. Alvin Kamara is your offensive rookie of the year. Book it. Houston scored 57 points vs Tennessee when Deshaun Watson was QB, and 13 points vs Tennessee on Monday when he wasn’t. After winning on the weekend, Jimmy Garropolo is now unbeaten in 3 career starts. Baltimore leads the league with 20 interceptions this year, so don’t play Big Ben.
Each week, I’ll give a brief list of the Fantasy relevant players that appear in the injury reports. You won’t see every player here, just the ones I think may have some Fantasy implications.

If you’re stressing out about your guy being on here as “Questionable”, don’t. Every man and his dog will wear the Questionable tag at some stage this year. If a player misses a training or has a niggle or anything really, they get deemed as “Questionable”. Here’s what the designations mean:
Questionable – 50/50 chance of playing. The most common of all designations. Even more so than healthy on some weeks
Doubtful – 75 percent chance will not play. Be a bit more concerned. Keep a close eye on reports
OUT – Speaks for itself. Definitely will not play this week.
IR – Injured Reserve. Player has basically been shut down for the year due to injury.
PUP – Physically Unable to Perform. We’ve all been here after a big night on the drink, right guys? This one is for long-term injuries sustained in pre-season or early on that aren’t necessarily season-ending (as is my understanding). They’ve got until about week 6 to be upgraded or placed on IR.
Suspended – Also speaks for itself, except this one has a definitive timeline (in most cases).
Start or Sit
You know the drill by now.
Jimmy Garropolo, QB, San Francisco – Let the Jimmy G era commence. 1 San Fran start, 1 win for Garropolo. It didn’t go exactly the way he would have wanted it to, with kicker Robbie Gould netting all 15 points for the 49ers, but JG looked good. He completed 26-37 passes, had 293 yards, 1 pick and led the final drive for the win. San Fran gets a tasty road date with the Texans this week, who are tied for 31st in TD passes allowed, and 22nd in total pass defence. Even Blaine Gabbert and Marcus Mariota managed to have top 10 fantasy performances in the weeks they played Houston recently.
Also Start: Philip Rivers vs. Redskins, Dak Prescott vs. Giants
Dion Lewis, RB, New Eangland – Lewis and Rex Burkhead have become the Pats backfield duo over the past few weeks and you could feel safe starting either this week against a very beatable Miami. Dion though, is the teams rushing RB, with Rex taking on more of a pass catcher role. Lewis has been getting over 10 carries a game and has forced 37 missed tackles on the year. These sides met in week 12. On that day, Lewis had his best running game of the season, going for 112 yards. The only downside was that Burkhead vultured Lewis chance at a score. You’d expect the Pats to run up a score here, even without Gronk, and after doing so will lean on the run game to close it out. I’d be starting Lewis in every league I had him in.
Also Start: Peyton Barber vs. Lions, Lamar Miller vs. 49ers
Josh Gordon, WR, Cleveland – Yes, Gordon was on the sit side of this piece last week as he played his first regular-season game since December of 2014. He’ll be rusty, I said. Give him time, I said. Be patient. Well, Gordon was targeted a team-high 11 times, catching 4 for 85 yards and he looked nothing like a dude who hasn’t played in 3 years. He probably would have snared a few more if Kizer didn’t go all Tim Tebow on him (that’s extremely inaccurate for those of you wondering). He gets an easier matchup in his return to Cleveland against a Green Bay pass defence that is 21st in the NFL The Pack has allowed the 4th most catches, the 5th most yards and 6th most touchdowns to wide receivers.
Also Start: Marquise Goodwin vs. Texans, Marvin Jones vs. Buccaneers
Jason Witten, TE, Dallas – Surprise! Another TE who’s playing against the Giants. You know the run the position has had vs NYG, and Witten started that gangsta shi….. Witten had 59 yards and a TD in week 1 and started the avalanche of scoring up until Jared Cook flopped last week. But his backup, Clive Walford, who had 3 catches to that point in the season, caught 4 balls for 57 yards. The Cowboys have been struggling in recent weeks (mwahahaha) but Witten remains one of the main redzone targets, catching his only reception for the score in the blowout of the Redskins a week ago. And the Giants have just placed Janoris Jenkins (CB) on IR, which makes moving the ball through the air all the more easy.
Also Start: Hunter Henry vs. Redskins, Austin Seferian-Jenkins vs. Broncos
Indianapolis Colts, DST – This is on the proviso that Taylor is still out injured this week and Peterman starts again. Remember what happened last time Peterman was the starting QB? 5 picks in one half, 2 of which were returned for TD’s. That was the Chargers, who are good. The Colts are not, but it’s a battle of who is worse, and based on career stats, that distinction goes to Peterman.
Also Start: New York Jets vs. Broncos, New England Patriots vs. Dolphins
Cam Newton, QB, Carolina – Jeez owning Newton is a rollercoaster. He’s the Shaun Johnson equivalent of the NFL. He’s a top 5 QB on the season for overall points, but his weekly scores have been all over the place. He’s been held under 200 yards passing in 4 of his last 5 games, thrown 1 or less TD’s in 5 of 7, but also rushed for 60 yards a game in those 7 to keep points ticking over. So if he’s getting the points, why the sit? Well, the Vikings is why. They just made the potent Atlanta passing attack impotent. Julio went from 12 catches/253 yards/2 TD’s to 2 catches/24 yards. Matt Ryan had 173 yards/0 TD’s. And the Vikes give up the fewest rush yards to opposing QB’s. That could be a result of the guys they’ve faced, but it’s still a stat. And not a good one for Cam.
Also Sit: Kirk Cousins vs. Chargers, Ben Roethlisberger vs. Ravens
Latavius Murray, RB, Minnesota – Murray is killing at the moment, recording 4 TD’s from weeks 10-12, and averaging over 80 yards per game from weeks 10-13. He’s clearly the lead back for the Vikings now. However, his numbers have been boosted by those 4 TD’s, and as I’ve said before (see Hunt, Kareem), TD’s are a stat you can rely on every week. Murray went for 76 yards vs Atlanta last week but didn’t get in the endzone. Instead, the 2 scores close to the goal went to Jerick McKinnon and Kyle Rudolph. This week, Murray see an NFC South opponent who rank top 5 in run defence, even though Ingram and Kamara just made them look like turnstiles. Carolina is 4th in rushing yards and 6th in rushing TD’s allowed. Latavius should still see plenty of the ball and might post a decent score, but don’t expect a 15 point game out of him.
Also Sit: Orleans Darkwa vs. Cowboys, Christian McCaffrey vs. Vikings
DeVante Parker, WR, Miami – Parker has seen a total of 6 catches and 36 yards over the past 3 weeks, and Parker hasn’t scored a touchdown since the Dolphins’ second game of the season. One of those aforementioned 3 games was a 1 catch/5 yard outing vs the Pats, this week’s opponent. In that game, CB Stephon Gilmore covered Parker most of the day, and Gilmore is still having a huge year for the reigning champs. Matt Moore was under centre last time these teams met, and whilst he’s no longer starting, the problem is that Jay Cutler is. And he’s just not that good either.
Also Sit: Devin Funchess vs. Vikings, Broncos WR’s vs. Jets
Vernon Davis, TE, Washington – If there was ever a time for Vernon Davis to step up, it’s been the past fortnight. He’s played both the Giants and Cowboys, who both give up good scores to TE’s, and the Skins #1 TE Jordan Reed has been out. But over that span, Davis has had just 2 catches and 15 yards. This week sees a far tougher matchup with the LA Chargers, who are ranked top 5 in limiting TE production. LA has only given up 2 TD’s to the TE position all year. I’m not expecting that Davis will be the one to break that streak.
Also Sit: Austin Hooper vs. Saints, Jared Cook vs. Chiefs
Philadelphia Eagles, DST – I’m a big Eagles fanboy. Especially this year when they’re finally doing well. The defensive unit has played a massive part in that. But we struggled against the Seahawks a week ago and the LA Rams are one of the best offenses in football. Jared Goff has only thrown 6 interceptions all season and been sacked just 20 times. And with all that possession, the Rams are putting up over 30 points per game. That doesn’t make for great DST scores.
Also Sit: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Lions, Miami Dolphins vs. Patriots
Peaks and Valleys right? One week after notching 89 points, Julio scored just 6 against the Vikings. He’s had a bad year, but even that is at another level. I’d never expect JJ to drop that low. Hopefully he bounces back this week in the Friday game vs New Orleans.
We did see some big scores this week with Alex Smith, Tyreek Hill, Le’Veon Bell and Alvin Kamara all topping 50+. But popular players like Julio, Ertz (6) and Evans (8) managed to keep overall scores relatively low. You would have been happy with a 450 ish total this week.
Vice-Captain – As I said, New Orleans vs Atlanta in the Friday game this week so it gives us a couple of VC options. Best of them all right now is Alvin Kamara. This kid is carrying fantasy coaches to the promised land with some unreal totals. He’s got a 5RA of 52.8 points and lowest score during that time of 44. Insane. Ingram, Freeman, Julio and Brees are also worth the free chance.
Bet of the Week
How are the Chiefs still running as favourites in any contest? In their past 7 matches, they’ve lost 6, including games against the Giants, Jets, Bills and…..Oakland Raiders. This time Oakland goes to KC for the match and are $2.65 underdogs. The way the Chiefs are playing, that’s worth the shot.
Houston are up against the “in-form” 49ers this week, but I still would expect Hopkins to have a big day. Get on him at the 100+ yards line this week.
Moneyball tips of the week
Alfred Morris ($6,900) had a field day last weekend vs the Redskins and now takes on another injury-depleted division rival in the NY Giants. Coming in at a few $100 cheaper is my start of the week Dion Lewis ($6,600). The 2 RB’s would make a very affordable 1-2 punch.
And Josh Gordon is priced similarly at $6,800. Worth a flex play I think.
