Lakeys’ Week 2 NFL Fantasy Primer

Week one is in the books and now is the time when you look at your team and ask yourself “what the hell was I thinking?”. It’s easy to do, and concern will be setting in after a few of the NFL’s studs underperformed to open the year. But if there’s one thing I’ve learnt in my years of playing, it’s this: don’t panic; don’t over-react.

For instance, it was abandon-ship on all things Todd Gurley II during the preseason and while he started slowly, a stat line of 97 yards on 14 carries isn’t anything to be sneezed at. In comparison, Aaron Jones totalled 39 yards from 13 carries, but I wouldn’t be worried about that either. Running backs don’t usually fare too well against the Chicago Bears defence. Last year, they allowed an NFL least 80 rush yards per game.

On the other hand, Dante Pettis was a hot name during the preseason but there were also some worrying rumours floating around. And then he totalled just 2 snaps all game. Not catches. Not targets. Snaps. 2 plays he was on the field for. That one is a worry.

And then there’s Lamar Jackson. He was a monster in week one (like 17/20 completions, 324 yards, 5 touchdowns and a perfect passer rating good) and his Baltimore Ravens embarrassed the Dolphins 59-10. The beating was so bad that reports surfaced post-game about “several Dolphins players” contacting their agents to demand a trade. But a couple of things about that. We already knew the Dolphins would be bad. Maybe not that bad, but still bad. And the Ravens have a history of doing this in week 1.

In saying that, Lamar could be a solid start over the next month of football. The Ravens next four opponents are Arizona, Kansas City, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. In week 1, those defences gave up 1356 passing yards, 67% completions, 12 TDs while recording only 1 interception. On that note…

START / SIT

  • Tom Brady, QB, New England – After what I just said about the Dolphins, plus the way he dismantled Pittsburgh, how could you not start Brady?
  • Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta – As an Eagles fan, I’m always extremely nervous when our defence comes up against a premier passing offence. Keenum torched us last week, in the first half anyway. I’d start Ryan.
  • Andy Dalton, QB, Cincinnati – He had a career day in a loss to the Seahawks, but faces ex-Hawk Richard Sherman and a 49ers D that gave Jamies Winston fits. Sit him if you’ve got other options.
  • Matt Breida, RB, San Francisco – Matt could also feature below as a waiver pickup, so if he’s not rostered, keep that in mind. He’ll now start for the 9ers with Coleman and McKinnon both out for the foreseeable future and he should start for you too.
  • Aaron Jones, RB, Green Bay – Despite not panicking on Jones, I think he’s a sit against a tough Vikings team.
  • Tyrell Williams, WR, Oakland – TyWill jumped to WR1 in Gruden’s offence after the other clown finally got released. And he didn’t disappoint. The Chiefs also allowed DJ Chark, Chris Conley and Dede Westbrook many catches, yards and TDs. Must-start.
  • Philip Dorsett, WR, New England – If AB remains out, then Dorsett is a must-start. He just had 95 yards and 2 TDs on Pittsburgh. Now plays Miami. But only if AB is out.
  • Stefon Diggs, WR, Minnesota – You can’t really sit Diggs if you got him, but it’s likely to be a very tough afternoon for him against Chicago.
  • Evan Engram, TE, New York – Engram showed exactly what he can do as essentially the first-choice receiver and now plays the Bills. He’s a start.
  • Darren Waller, TE, Oakland – Anyone who watches “Hard Knocks’ will be familiar with Waller. And if you’re not, just ask Catfish about him. He’s in love. Start.

WAIVER WIRE PICKUPS

Waivers from last weekend should start clearing on this afternoon, or Thursday if you’ve got a late setup. The following is a quick hit of some of the players I would be targeting if they’re available to you.

  • DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia – The concern was whether DJax and Wentz would have had the time to develop the required chemistry for him to be a weapon from the get-go. He answered that with two-50+ yard TDs. So, I guess it’s a yes.
  • john Ross III, WR, Cincinnati – Another WR who showed out. 7 catches, 158 yards, 2 TDs. Ross is a former first round pick and the Bengals have just been waiting for him to break out. This could be it.
  • Chris Thompson, RB, Washington – Derrius Guice hurt his other knee and will now miss “a couple of games”. So, not only will AP get a recall, but Thompson should see a bigger workload.
  • TJ Hockenson, TE, Detroit – TJ Gronkenson more like. He’s already garnering some huge comparisons. Get him before it’s too late.
  • Austin Ekeler, RB, LA Chargers – This guy did Melvin Gordon no favours in his holdout for a bigger contract. Kind of like how James Connor exploded on the scene in Pittsburgh last year.
  • Jacoby Brissett, QB, Indianapolis – In the same game, Brissett looked pretty good in Andrew Luck’s old gig. There are worse options at (backup) Quarterback.
  • Mecole Hardman, WR, Kansas City – When the offseason Tyreek Hill scandal was in full force, the Chiefs drafted a rookie replica. And now Hill has a dislocated clavicle which will see him miss games. So sad for him.

Dream Team

We saw some big first up scores in Dream Team thanks to Lamar’s day, along with Mahomes, Watson and Wentz. It’s nice to get that initial leg up, but as I keep saying, don’t panic if you started elsewhere. There are still 16 weeks to go.

With 24 trades available to us, I’d lean towards using two if you need to fix up your team. But then only if you’ve made glaring mistakes. Anything can happen in a week, and you’ve got another chance yet to look at the guys you’ve missed before prices change.

But by all means, make those trades if you got guys like Tyreek Hill, Derrius Guice, Joe Mixon, Nick Foles, etc. Basically, anyone on the injury reports who might be looking at a couple of weeks on the sideline.

Guys I’d be looking at are Marquise Brown (WR, $3.4M), Gardner Minshew (QB, $2.6M), Hockenson (TE, $3.8M), Malcolm Brown (RB, $2.8M), Devin Singletary (RB, $2.6M), Terry McLaurin (WR, $2.6M).

P.S. what was it I said in the preseason about the Antonio Brown show??

Picked up Antonio Brown in 2 leagues on waivers just after he signed with the Pats thinking ripper. Today I read he is accused of sexual assault from 2017, never a dull moment around him.

    Great write up mate.

Traded Hill to Watkins and Renfrow to Brown in DT.

In draft I’m trying to get either Watkins, Brown or T Williams for Lamar Miller and Hockenson for Seibert and Brisset for Houston D. .

Missed the draft so got a weird side. Still ended up on 321 this week, have Rams, Ravens and Houston D, 2 kickers and 1 Qb of Murray haha

It’s always rough when you miss a draft and then have to claw a respectable team together. But Kyler isn’t at all a bad get by the early looks of it. Good luck with it mate.

Thanks mate. I picked my pre draft list thing but somehow only got the WR’s n RB’s I wanted which is awesome haha. Managed to jag Kamara, Barkley, DHop, Thomas, Cooks and JuJu. Got Watkins, Brisset and Hock off the wire n picked up Mack off free agents.

I’m really enjoying the draft format. I might look at doing it in NRL next year. The lure of all teams being different is too good!

Couple of injury timelines. [estimated] T Hill 4-6 weeks and Hunter Henry 4 weeks,[ left knee.] D Guice 2-4 weeks.

Sucks for Hunter Henry. Want him to stay healthy and become one of the top TEs. Honestly don’t care about Hill he is scum but don’t wish injuries on anyone. I’m glad we get to see some more Peterson because of Guice being out though.

Nice write up. For DT, I have 4 potential trades, just unsure which to do this week: Sanders to Ekeler – not sure if it’s worthwhile. Ekeler looks very involved, but Gordon coming back will impact him. Will he make enough cash in that time? Falcons DST to Packers/49ers DST – Falcons looked horrible on defence, and I don’t see that ending any time soon (Super Bowl hangover, Nth Qld Cowboys is that you???). Packers looked great on defence so should be a solid shout, but will rarely be played over the Ravens defence. So looking towards the 49ers, who… Read more »

Also on top of this, was looking at:

Brissett to Jackson, loved him coming out of college and think he will light it up this year.

Would you do this trade before any of the others? Or would Minshew be better?

I 100% agree about getting rid of the Falcons DST but I think you can wait another week to get another look and then decide on which team to bring in. You won’t be playing them this week anyway. Sanders to Ekeler is a good option. Sanders will be a stud eventually but right now is in a RBBC. I can’t see Gordon coming back to the Chargers any time soon. Last report I saw was that he’d hold out until about week 8-10. Watkins gets a bump in that KC offense and now without Hill for a few weeks.… Read more »

Also one player for those in DT to watch could be John Ross. I think he will break out this year. Don’t have him yet, but priced at $4.8mil I think Zac Taylor will get the most out of him and he will break out, although I don’t think the Bengals will have the greatest record.

Cheers Semi! Poorish start in Dreamteam but I’m fairly happy with my team. Decided to trade Edelman to Watkins given AB’s signing and Hill’s injury. Other trade was to bring in M Brown. Didn’t realise Hunter was injured. Lucky I have Waller on the bench so I will take your advice and play him. Cheers for the article. Flew blindly without them last year!

Help a noob. WR. Trading in Ross & M Brown. Out are JJ Arcega-W & M Goodwin. This ok?

With injury mentioned to Henry is he a hold or potential trade out next week? Have Kittle & Hockensen to play. Cheeeeeers.

Not the worst idea to hold Henry another week to get more info on his injury. And prices won’t change from now to then either. Keep an eye on Waller from Oakland this week as a downgrade.

I think you grabbed the wrong G-win. The breakout candidate is Chris GODwin, not Marquise GOODwin. Easy mistake to make though. A trade down to M.Brown isn’t a bad play either. I’d personally like to see another week out of Ross but wouldn’t talk you out of it. JJAWs isn’t likely to see a whole lot of burn this year.

Thanks appreciate it. Maybe I did grab the wrong one when making my team…..who knows I’d have to go back and look at the other post and can’t be bothered. I’ve moved on.

Bit of help lads. Could make a few trade options this week, thoughts atm are:
    Option A:
    Adams > Watkins
    Sanders > Ekeler

    Option B:
    Mayfield > Brissett
    Washington > Watkins

    Option C:
    Chubb > Ekeler
    Washington > Gallup

Team before trades are as follows

    Mayfield Jackson (Murray)
Barkley Kamara Chubb Jacobs (Sanders D.Montgomery)
Adams Hopkins Thomas JuJu D.Westbrook M.Brown (Washington Metcalf)
    Kelce Hockenson (Henry)
    Butker (Pineiro)
    Rams (Raiders)
    $10 ITB

Why not just sell Henry to Waller to gain some funds. Not sure of the prices off the top of my head but then you could do something like Washington -> Gallup or Westbrook -> Watkins. I wouldn’t be trading Adams or Chubb unless they are injured.

NFL talk gotta love it Started off well in DT with an even 600. Good enough to put me in 91st Trades of Hill to Watkins Henry to Hockenson Leaves my team as Lamar, Brissett, Kyler CMac, Cook, Chubb, Jacobs, Monty, Guice Adams, Hopkins, Julio, Thomas, JuJu, Watkins, Gallup, Washington Walker, Waller, Hockenson Gay, Seibert Pats, Cowboys Leaves me a whopping 15mil ITB Next week I’ll look at Washington to the best cheapie out of MBrown/Ross or another WR who looks like making good cash Guice is a massive inconvenience but not sure how I’ll play RB. Doesn’t seem to… Read more »

Singletary could be a Guice replacement, they expect him to take over as No 1 RB as the season progresses. Nice score.

Considered the VC but would’ve needed to hope Monty is comparable to Jacobs this week as my AE if CMac went big…..wasn’t comfortable with that haha

AE scores are by position only actually! So you could have nuffed at K quite easily… -Your 8 Substitutes will act as automatic emergencies in their matching position only. They will automatically have their score added (as long as they score greater than 0) to replace a player in your Starting 16 who receives a score of 0 because they didn’t play OR they played but did not receive any fantasy stat points. If your player received fantasy stat points from the match that add up to 0 (e.g. 4 points for Rushing Yards and -4 points for a Fumble… Read more »
