Wenin’s Teams Analysis – Round 2

The Wenin’s had an OK start to the 2021 season with a score of 1,289, finishing with a Round 1 ranking of 7,870. Thank god for Captain Teddy.

Onto the Round 2 teams.

For the second week in a row there a minimal shocks to the named teams. However, there’s plenty to consider after an opening weekend that offered up some surprises and therefore, there’s a lot to discuss.

Let’s go.

EELS v STORM

Thursday, 8.05pm, Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta

Eels: 1. Clint Gutherson 2. Maika Sivo 3. Tom Opacic 4. Waqa Blake 5. Blake Ferguson 6. Dylan Brown 7. Mitchell Moses 8. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 9. Reed Mahoney 10. Junior Paulo 11. Shaun Lane 12. Ryan Matterson 13. Nathan Brown

Bench: 14. Oregon Kaufusi 15. Isaiah Papali’i 16. Will Smith 17. Marata Niukore

Reserves: 18. Keegan Hipgrave 19. Haze Dunster 19. Ray Stone 20. Joey Lussick

Injuries:

  • Marata Niukore (suspended, round 2)
  • Ray Stone (knee, round 2)
  • Bryce Cartwright (broken jaw, round 4-6)
  • Michael Oldfield (knee, round 4-6)
  • Michael Jennings (suspended, indefinite)

Teams Analysis

Marata Niukore returns from suspension pushing Keegan Hipgrave to the reserves.

Reed Mahoney went massive against the Broncos with 134 points, including 61 in pure base and a try. He’s definitely on the radar before price rises kick-in after Round 3 given some of the higher-priced hookers flopped in Round 1. However, with a poor score against the Storm, that Round 1 score will drop out of his rolling average quickly, so you can wait a week.

Blake Ferguson and Junior Paulo were on my radar heading into Round 1 and both lived up to the hype. It’s a tougher encounter this weekend against the Storm for Ferguson, while Paulo could be a must-have if he continues to push the 60 MPG mark. Isaiah Papali’i also impressed with 64 points in 56 minutes off the bench and is another player to monitor before the initial price rises. Unfortunately, instead of Joseph Tapine, I ended up selecting Nathan Brown and he underperformed with 55 points in 56 minutes.

Storm: 1. Ryan Papenhuyzen 2. George Jennings 3. Reimis Smith 4. Justin Olam 5. Josh Addo-Carr 6. Cameron Munster 7. Jahrome Hughes 8. Jesse Bromwich 9. Brandon Smith 10. Christian Welch 11. Felise Kaufusi 12. Kenneath Bromwich 13. Nelson Asofa-Solomona

Bench: 14. Tyson Smoothy 15. Tui Kamikamica 16. Tom Eisenhuth 17. Tyson Smoothy

Reserves: 18. Nicho Hynes 19. Darryn Schonig 20. Cooper Johns 21. Dean Ieremia

Injuries:

  • Brenko Lee (hamstring, round 3)
  • Harry Grant (knee, round 4)
  • Dale Finucane (calf, round 5)
  • Max King (Achilles, round 10)

Teams Analysis

There are no changes to the Round 1 winning 17.

Brandon Smith played 69 minutes but largely failed to capitalise with 45 points and no attacking points. Hold him for another week. Christian Welch was unlucky not to score a try (i.e. he absolutely butchered it); however, his 48 points in pure base from 51 minutes is quite close to what he produced to finish the season last year and so it’s not quite panic stations yet.

WARRIORS v KNIGHTS

Friday, 6pm, Central Coast Stadium

Warriors: 1. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck 2. David Fusitu’a 3. Adam Pompey 4. Peta Hiku 5. Ken Maumalo 6. Kodi Nikorima 7. Chanel Harris-Tavita 8. Addin Fonua-Blake 9. Wade Egan 10. Jamayne Taunoa-Brown 11. Eliesa Katoa 12. Bayley Sironen 13. Tohu Harris

Bench: 14. Jazz Tevaga 15. Ben Murdoch-Masila 16. Leeson Ah Mau 17. Bunty Afoa

Reserves: 18. Marcelo Montoya 20. Sean O’Sullivan 21. Tom Ale 22. Jack Murchie

Injuries:

  • Euan Aitken (ankle, round 9-11)
  • Kane Evans (lack of training, round 2)
  • Jack Murchie (pectoral, round 2)
  • Jackson Frei (knee, round 2)

Teams Analysis

Euan Aitken looks set to be sidelined for 8-10 weeks with an ankle injury and has been replaced in the centres by Adam Pompey.

Addin Fonua-Blake is a beast. In his first game for the Warriors, he played 57 minutes for 65 points, with 51 coming from pure base. Both Eliesa Katoa and Bayley Sironen failed to play full 80-minute games on the edges, with Ben Murdoch-Masila playing 32 off the bench. Tohu Harris played the full 80 minutes at lock, but Jazz Tevaga replaced Wayde Egan at hooker in the second half and so for me, it’s a watch with Egan being named for this weekends clash.

Knights: 1. Tex Hoy 2. Starford To’a 3. Enari Tuala 4. Bradman Best 5. Hymel Hunt 6. Kurt Mann 7. Mitchell Pearce 8. David Klemmer 9. Jayden Brailey 10. Daniel Saifiti 11. Tyson Frizell 12. Mitchell Barnett 13. Connor Watson

Bench: 14. Sauaso Sue 15. Jacob Saifiti 16. Josh King 17. Brodie Jones

Reserves: 18. Phoenix Crossland 19. Pasami Saulo 20. Dominic Young 21. Gehamat Shibasaki

Injuries:

  • Edrick Lee (foot, round 4)
  • Kalyn Ponga (shoulder, rounds 4-5)
  • Blake Green (knee, rounds 5-8)
  • Lachlan Fitzgibbon (shoulder, indefinite)
  • Jirah Momoisea (Achilles, indefinite)

Teams Analysis

No changes to the Round 1 17 with both Bradman Best and Kurt Mann backing up after initially being in serious doubt due to injury. Connor Watson has been named at lock, but shifted to the bench before kick-off with Sauaso Sue starting.

The big takeaway for me here (despite the injury recoveries outlined above) was the performance of the Knights forwards in Round 1. David Klemmer played 74 minutes for 82 points, with 72 coming from pure base, while Mitch Barnett and David Saifiti both benefited from plenty of attacking stats with scores of 105 and 128 respectively. However, Barnett only produced 42 points in pure base and will lose goal-kicking duties in two to three weeks, while Saifiti scored two tries. Tyson Frizell also impressed with 78 points in 80 minutes on the edge, with 56 coming from pure base.

Jayden Brailey is a massive watch this week following his 86 points in 80 minutes from the hooker position. If he can continue to produce 50 base points per game and get big minutes then there’s going to be plenty of money to be made here.

TITANS v BRONCOS

Friday, 8.05pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast

Titans: 1. AJ Brimson 2. Anthony Don 3. Phillip Sami 4. Patrick Herbert 5. Corey Thompson 6. Ashley Taylor 7. Jamal Fogarty 8. Jarrod Wallace 9. Mitch Rein 10. Moeaki Fotuaika 11. Kevin Proctor 12. David Fifita 13. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui

Bench: 14. Tyrone Peachey 15. Sam Lisone 16. Jaimin Jolliffe 17. Erin Clark

Reserves: 18. Beau Fermor 19. Herman Ese’ese 20. Sam McIntyre 21. Tanah Boyd

Injuries:

  • Brian Kelly (hand, round 5)

Teams Analysis:

Phillip Sami replaces Brian Kelly (fractured hand) in the centres in the only change for the Titans. The injury to Kelly will see owners breaking the cardinal sin of trading after Round 1 with the gun centre not expected back for three weeks.

It was a bit of an underwhelming performance by the Titans in Round 1. However, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui owners will be happy with what they saw with 60 points in 65 minutes and 52 of these coming from pure base. There’s plenty of upside here and a 100 is just around the corner, so I consider him to be one of the better VC options this weekend.

Special mention to David Fifita, with the former Bronco playing 70 minutes after being in hospital just two days before the game with an infection.

Broncos: 1. Jamayne Isaako 2. Xavier Coates 3. Herbie Farnworth 4. Tesi Niu 5. David Mead 6. Anthony Milford 7. Brodie Croft 8. Tevita Pangai Junior 9. Jake Turpin 10. Thomas Flegler 11. Alex Glenn 12. Jordan Riki 13. Patrick Carrigan

Bench: 14. John Asiata 15. Rhys Kennedy 16. Ethan Bullemor 17. Ben Te’o

Reserves: 18. Tom Dearden 19. Richard Kennar 21. Cory Paix 22. Corey Oates

Injuries:

  • Jesse Arthars (ankle, round 2)
  • Dale Copley (throat, round 2)
  • Payne Haas (suspended, round 4)
  • Matt Lodge (hamstring, round 4-5)
  • Kotoni Staggs (knee, mid-season)

Teams Analysis:

Xavier Coates and John Asiata have both been cleared to play, but must surely be under some doubt. Matt Lodge is expected to miss 2-3 weeks with a hamstring injury and is a must sell. Thomas Flegler has replaced Lodge in the front row, while Rhys Kennedy comes onto the bench.

David Mead was one of the surprise packets of the round with 77 points, including 32 points in pure base, which for a winger is class. His score also included a massive 11 points lost due to missed tackles, penalties and errors. At $230k, he’s definitely a player to monitor before the initial price rises, but I think you can wait a week. Anthony Milford also shined, especially in the first half and at just $305k, he’s obviously worth keeping tabs on.

Patrick Carrigan is definitely one to watch for me. While I acknowledge that the injuries to Lodge and Asiata may have seen him with extended minutes, 69 points in pure base from 80 minutes at lock is nothing to sneeze at. However, he doesn’t have the upside that some of the other forward options have. And one of those options could be Tevita Pangai, with 79 points from just 39 minutes! Included within this score was 45 points in purse base and a massive seven effective offloads. A massive watch here.

BULLDOGS v PANTHERS

Saturday, 3pm, Bankwest Stadium, Sydney

Bulldogs: 1. Corey Allan 2. Nick Meaney 3. Will Hopoate 4. Nick Cotric 5. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 6. Jake Averillo 7. Kyle Flanagan 8. Ofahiki Ogden 9. Sione Katoa 10. Jack Hetherington 11. Adam Elliott 12. Raymond Faitala-Mariner 13. Josh Jackson

Bench: 14. Jeremy Marshall-King 15. Renouf Atoni 16. Corey Waddell 17. Dylan Napa

Reserves: 19. Tuipulotu Katoa 20. Chris Smith 21. Lachlan Lewis 22. Joe Stimson

Injuries:

  • Jeremy Marshall-King (foot, round 2)
  • Luke Thompson (suspended, round 5)
  • Jayden Okunbor (knee, mid-late season)
  • Christian Crichton (knee, season)

Team News

Jeremy Marshall-King returns from injury, pushing Brad Deitz out of the squad completely. Raymond Faitala-Mariner has been promoted to the starting side, with Corey Waddell making way.

Faitala-Mariner is a player to monitor now that he has been promoted to the starting side. His price may now fall following an opening score of 22 and if his minutes can creep up towards the 70 MPG that he played last year, then put him on your watch list. Jack Hetherington failed to fire despite playing 58 minutes, while Ofahiki Ogden could be the better cash cow with 39 points from 51 minutes at prop. Josh Jackson played 74 minutes for 57 points with 59 in base (-4 in missed tackles/penalties) and is a mid-pricer to monitor.

Panthers: 1. Dylan Edwards 2. Charlie Staines 3. Paul Momirovski 4. Stephen Crichton 5. Brian To’o 6. Jarome Luai 7. Nathan Cleary 8. Moses Leota 9. Api Koroisau 10. James Fisher-Harris 11. Viliame Kikau 12. Kurt Capewell 13. Isaah Yeo

Bench: 14. Tyrone May 15. Spencer Leniu 16. Matthew Eisenhuth 17. Liam Martin

Reserves: 18. Scott Sorensen 19. Matt Burton 20. Robert Jennings 21. Mitch Kenny

Injuries:

Nil injuries to report.

Teams Analysis

No changes for the Panthers.

Those who invested heavily in Api Koroisau will be concerned with the 2020 star playing just 48 minutes. It’s wise to wait a week, but the alarm bells are ringing. Kurt Capewell played less than 70 minutes and without the try and the two linebreaks, you’re looking at a score of just 31. I wouldn’t be rushing to trade him in just yet.

Brian To’o, Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary all lived up to their headline billing and while they face a likely bottom four contender again this weekend, the weather is looking a bit dubious.

Spencer Leniu played 38 minutes from the bench, which is a great result. Before trading him in, it’s worth to wait another week to see what happens.

SEA EAGLES v RABBITOHS

Saturday, 5.30pm, Lottoland, Manly

Sea Eagles: 1. Dylan Walker 2. Jason Saab 3. Brad Parker 4. Moses Suli 5. Reuben Garrick 6. Kieran Foran 7. Daly Cherry-Evans 8. Josh Aloiai 9. Lachlan Croker 10. Martin Taupau 11. Andrew Davey 12. Curtis Sironen 13. Jake Trbojevic

Bench: 14. Cade Cust 15. Jack Gosiewski 16. Sean Keppie 17. Taniela Paseka

Reserves: 18. Josh Schuster 19. Tevita Funa 20. Toafofoa Sipley 21. Morgan Harper

Injuries:

  • Tom Trbojevic (hamstring, round 4)
  • Haumole Olakau’atu (elbow, indefinite)
  • Jorge Taufua (Achilles, indefinite)
  • Manase Fainu (stood down, indefinite)

Teams Analysis

Andrew Davey starts on the edge for Jack Gosiewski, who has shifted to the bench. Tevita Funa drops to the reserves for Cade Cust,

Davey is a player to monitor now that he starts, but this forward rotation has trap written all over it.

Dylan Walker bombed, as did Jason Saab and both are possible trade out options as early as this week.

Rabbitohs: 1. Latrell Mitchell 2. Alex Johnston 3. Dane Gagai 4. Campbell Graham 5. Jaxson Paulo 6. Cody Walker 7. Adam Reynolds 8. Thomas Burgess 9. Damien Cook 10. Tevita Tatola 11. Keaon Koloamatangi 12. Jaydn Su’A 13. Cameron Murray

Bench: 14. Benji Marshall 15. Mark Nicholls 16. Patrick Mago 17. Jai Arrow

Reserves: 18. Liam Knight 19. Tautau Moga 20. Josh Mansour 21. Jacob Host

Injuries:

  • Liam Knight (concussion, round 2)
  • Hame Sele (ribs, round 3-4)
  • Blake Taaffe (ankle, round 8)
  • Taane Milne (knee, rounds 7-9)
  • Braidon Burns (knee, 7-9)
  • Jed Cartwright (back, round 6-10)
  • Brock Gardner (Achilles, indefinite)

Teams Analysis

Josh Mansour has surprisingly been dropped, while Jacob Host is also out of the 17 with Jaxson Paulo and Keaon Koloamatangi replacing them in the starting side. Patrick Mago joins the bench.

The omission of Mansour is a bit of a bombshell and horrible news for the 5k odd owners. It’s a tough call to make but it’s always hard to trade a gun.

Koloamatangi is priced at $300k and is definitely one to monitor now that he has won the starting edge role. He produced 36 points in 34 minutes last weekend with 34 coming from pure base.

Jai Arrow will be a popular trade-in target but I swear we have been here before and left the party extremely disappointed. Let’s see what happens in Round 2; however, at the price ($474.9k), it will be hard not to bring him in next weekend if he backs up his Round 1 performance.

Consider bringing in Cody Walker ASAP given the run of games that Souths have ahead.

COWBOYS v DRAGONS

Saturday, 7.35pm, QCB Stadium, Townsville

Cowboys: 1. Scott Drinkwater 2. Kyle Feldt 3. Esan Marsters 4. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow 5. Valentine Holmes 6. Michael Morgan 7. Jake Clifford 8. Francis Molo 9. Reece Robson 10. Jordan McLean 11. Mitchell Dunn 12. Coen Hess 13. Jason Taumalolo

Bench: 14. Jake Granville 15. Josh McGuire 16. Corey Jensen 17. Reuben Cotter

Reserves: 18. Lachlan Burr 19. Shane Wright 20. Murray Taulagi 21. Ben Hampton

Injuries:

  • Kane Bradley (shoulder, round 4)
  • Tom Gilbert (broken fibula, early rounds)

Teams Analysis

Geez, I hope you’ve got other plans this Saturday night….No changes.

There’s been plenty written about Jason Taumalolo and while Todd Payten may think it was due to his lack of work-rate, we all really know that it was down to just one thing. The Banner!

Dragons: 1. Matthew Dufty 2. Cody Ramsey 3. Jack Bird 4. Zac Lomax 5. Mikaele Ravalawa 6. Corey Norman 7. Ben Hunt 8. Blake Lawrie 9. Andrew McCullough 10. Paul Vaughan 11. Josh Kerr 12. Tariq Sims 13. Tyrell Fuimaono

Bench: 14. Poasa Faamausili 15. Trent Merrin 16. Daniel Alvaro 17. Brayden Wiliame

Reserves: 18. Adam Clune 19. Kaide Ellis 20. Jackson Ford 21. Jordan Pereira

Injuries:

  • Jayden Sullivan (hamstring, round 4)
  • Cameron McInnes (knee, season)
  • Jack de Belin (stood down)

Teams Analysis

Corey Norman comes back into the team from suspension, with Adam Clune dropping to the reserves. No other changes.

Tyrell Fuimaono surprised a few with 56 points in 60 minutes, and 46 from pure base. Is this the real life or is this just fantasy? Don’t trade him in just yet.

TIGERS v ROOSTERS

Sunday, 4.05pm, Campbelltown Stadium

Tigers: 1. Daine Laurie 2. David Nofoaluma 3. James Roberts 4. Joseph Leilua 5. AJ Kepaoa 6. Adam Doueihi 7. Luke Brooks 8. James Tamou 9. Jacob Liddle 10. Joe Ofahengaue 11. Luke Garner 12. Luciano Leilua 13. Alex Twal

Bench: 14. Moses Mbye 15. Thomas Mikaele 16. Stefano Utoikamanu 17. Tommy Talau

Reserves: 18. Russell Packer 19. Alex Seyfarth 20. Michael Chee Kam 21. Jock Madden

Injuries:

  • Adam Doueihi (suspended, round 2)
  • Zane Musgrove (suspended, round 3)
  • Billy Walters (knee, round 6-7)
  • Shawn Blore (wrist, round 6-8)

Teams Analysis

Adam Doueihi returns from suspension, seeing Moses Mbye drop to the bench. However, thankfully, Daine Laurie has been retained at fullback. Russell Packer has been relegated to reserves and this sees the Tigers head into the match against the Roosters with a very odd bench, including two utilities and two middle forwards.

Before you rush out to trade in Jacob Liddle, it’s definitely worth waiting to see what happens to his minutes now that Mbye is in the #14 jersey.

I really liked Luciano Leilua’s game on the weekend, both in real life and in SuperCoach. With this bench, he’s almost assured of playing 80 minutes and with a base pushing up over 53, he could be a very solid POD option this year. Joe Ofahengaue will also have gained himself some more fans with 56 points in 43 minutes and 42 coming from pure base. At $340k, he shapes as a possible buy before the initial price rise.

Roosters: 1. James Tedesco 2. Daniel Tupou 3. Josh Morris 4. Joseph Manu 5. Brett Morris 6. Lachlan Lam 7. Luke Keary 8. Lindsay Collins 9. Freddy Lussick 10. Siosiua Taukeiaho 11. Nat Butcher 12. Sitili Tupouniua 13. Isaac Liu

Bench: 14. Drew Hutchinson 15. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 16. Fletcher Baker 17. Daniel Suluka-Fifita

Reserves: 18. Matt Ikuvalu 19. Egan Butcher 20. Sam Walker 21. Tukupa-Ke Hau Tapuha

Injuries:

  • Jake Friend (concussion, TBA)
  • Adam Keighran (wrist, TBA)
  • Angus Crichton (suspended, round 3)
  • Sam Verrills (knee, round 3-4)
  • Victor Radley (knee/suspended, round 4)
  • Billy Smith (shoulder, mid-season)
  • Boyd Cordner (concussion, indefinite)

Teams Analysis

Angus Crichton is out suspended for one-match, which is a crunching blow at this stage of the season. Crichton has been replaced in the starting side by Nat Butcher, while Fletcher Baker will debut from the bench. Jake Friend will miss through concussion and this sees Freddy Lussick come into the starting side. Adam Keighran is out with a wrist injury and has been replaced on the bench by Drew Hutchison. The rumours surrounding Sam Walker have not come to fruition, for now.

Siosiua Taukeiaho was all the rage this pre-season and while he did score 76 points, his minutes of just 43 are a big concern. He needs to be punching out over 55 MPG to be considered a keeper. On the other hand, his starting prop partner, Lindsay Collins, scored 63 points in 63 minutes, with 61 coming from pure base and is, therefore, a massive watch.

Lachlan Lam is on tenterhooks after a disappointing Round 1, and could be sold as early as next week.

SHARKS v RAIDERS

Sunday, 6.15pm, Jubilee Stadium, Sydney

Sharks: 1. Will Kennedy 2. Sione Katoa 3. Josh Dugan 4. Mawene Hiroti 5. Ronaldo Mulitalo 6. Matt Moylan 7. Chad Townsend 8. Braden Hamlin-Uele 9. Blayke Brailey 10. Aaron Woods 11. Briton Nikora 12. Wade Graham 13. Toby Rudolf

Bench: 14. Connor Tracey 15. Aiden Tolman 16. Jack Williams 17. Billy Magoulias

Reserves: 18. Nene Macdonald 19. Teig Wilton 20. Andrew Fifita 21. Braydon Trindall

Injuries:

  • Royce Hunt (knee, round 2-3)
  • Jesse Ramien (suspended, round 5)
  • Jackson Ferris (foot, TBA)
  • Siosifa Talakai (shoulder, round 2-3)
  • Shaun Johnson (Achilles, round 7-8)
  • Jack A Williams (throat, indefinite)
  • Bronson Xerri (stood down, indefinite)

Teams Analysis

Jesse Ramien is out suspended and will miss three games. Mawene Hiroti comes into the starting side as Ramien’s replacement. No other changes.

Not much to talk about here apart from hoping that Matt Moylan’s hammies hold up.

Raiders: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2. Bailey Simonsson 3. Sebastian Kris 4. Curtis Scott 5. Jordan Rapana 6. Jack Wighton 7. George Williams 8. Josh Papalii 9. Josh Hodgson 10. Dunamis Lui 11. Hudson Young 12. Elliott Whitehead 13. Joseph Tapine

Bench: 14. Siliva Havili 15. Ryan Sutton 16. Sia Soliola 17. Ryan James

Reserves: 18. Sam Williams 19. Tom Starling 20. Emre Guler 21. Harley Smith-Shields

Injuries:

Jarrod Croker (shoulder, rounds 3-4)

Teams Analysis

No changes.

Josh Hodgson failed to fire, with just 30 points in 80 minutes. He will be a sell for me next week if I don’t see something from him in Round 2 given the genuinely good options available at hooker.

I’m not sure what to make of Joseph Tapine’s performance. The minutes are a concern (42), but there’s no disputing the output with 52 points in pure base and three offloads. If he’s going to continue to be this efficient, then he’s close to a must-have. However, do not rush out and buy him just yet. Hudson Young also impressed with 79 points in 80 minutes, including 50 in pure base. At $474k, he’s a potential mid-pricer to keep a very close eye on.

It was a wonderful thing to see Ryan James back in the game and scoring tries #bigmanszn. At $237k, I’m very close to pulling the trigger early on him for Saab, but it could be worth waiting a week to see if the minutes continue to be there.

Mansour wasn’t a surprise did u watch the game!

Radioman

Another great write up. Only movement I am looking at so far is C Smith to Ryan James just to give me some cash & another option for points.

kylo klokstad

Thanks always Wenin. Always so helpful. Good luck this week

LOTE

How can Mansour be a gun when he’s not even playing?

BT

Cheers Wenin – comprehensive as always

Massive attack

Great work!!
